Stratified vertical sediment profiles increase burrowing crab effects on salt marsh edaphic conditions

چکیده
Abstract Burrowing animals can profoundly affect the biological structure and ecosystem functions of their environments. For instance, burrowing crabs increase sediment deposition facilitate homogenization turnover, with potential impacts to biogeochemistry. However, relative importance on dynamics vary considerably between, within, habitats. Sediment properties influence how will edaphic conditions, but these studies often assume homogenous conditions fail consider change depth. Thus, understanding crab effects are influenced by vertical profile should inform where conditions. Here, we conducted an intensive field survey across three tidal salt marshes variable understand if marsh profiles help predict nature crab–sediment relationships. We found that homogenize sediments in all marshes, were greater highly stratified profiles. Our study suggests a may provide critical insights into physical characteristics surface sediments—especially restored, created, managed marshes.

متن کاملWorms as wedges: Effects of sediment mechanics on burrowing behavior
Recent studies document linear elastic response of muddy marine sediments to load and deformation on temporal and spatial scales relevant to animal movement, with burrowers making openings for movement in such sediments by fracture. Cracks propagate through linear elastic solids in mode I (opening-mode crack growth) when the stress intensity factor (KI) at the crack tip exceeds the material’s f...
متن کاملSalt Marsh Tidal Channels
Salt marsh tidal channels are highly sinuous. For this project, field surveys and aerial photographs were used to characterize the planform of tidal channels at China Camp Marsh in the San Francisco Bay, California. To model the planform evolution, we assume that the topographic curvature of the channel centreline is a key element driving meander migration. Extraction of curvature data from a p...
متن کاملParasite infection and sand coarseness increase sand crab (Emerita analoga) burrowing time.
Parasites with indirect life cycles require trophic transmission from intermediate hosts to definitive (vertebrate) hosts. Transmission may be facilitated if parasite infection alters the behavior of intermediate hosts such that they are more vulnerable to predation. Vulnerability to predation may also be influenced by abiotic factors; however, rarely are the effects of parasites and abiotic fa...
متن کاملFiddler crab burrowing aVects growth and production of the white mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa) in a restored Florida coastal marsh
Positive plant–animal interactions are important in community ecology, but relatively little attention has been paid to their eVect on the production of mangroves, dominant halophytic trees in tropical coastal marshes. Here, the role of Wddler crab (Uca spp.) burrowing on the growth and production of the white mangrove, Laguncularia racemosa (<2 years old), was examined in a restored marsh in T...
